I am Jessica Gomes

For somebody who is at a level where one would almost be completely excused for being a through-and-through diva, Jess is well and truly down to Earth and so easy to work with that it’s not even fair.

I can track my first encounter with Jessica Gomes to two years ago, at David Jones’ Spring/Summer 2012 showcase, where all present gasped audibly when she first marched out in a one-piece that fit her like a glove and made us all reassess our exercise regimes. Little me, having not been too well-versed in Sports Illustrated, asked who is that, trotted home to did my research, and decided that it would be pretty neat (for want of a better word) if I would have grown enough as a photographer at some point, to shoot with this Eurasian beauty, and as it has turned out, fully-fledged Australian sweetheart.

Et voilà.

I present the third photo editorial installment of my collaboration with THE FASHION PROJECT: all hail the Gomes.

Because Jessica Gomes is an awesome human.

For somebody who is at a level where one would almost be completely excused for being a through-and-through diva, Jess is well and truly down to Earth and so easy to work with that it’s not even fair. I had certainly heard as much from a few mutual friends, Los Angeles and Sydney siders alike, who have sung her praises over the past few years, but every member of staff, volunteer, security guard, and stylist who Jess interacted with, over the course of the David Jones opening show day down in Melbourne, was as blown away by her approachability as they were by her incredible stage presence.

The same can be said for her photographic magnetism, which then speaks volumes for her lengthy career in front of the camera, which I’m so sure will evolve into moving pictures and Hollywood. Jess has the face and the focus of a star that didn’t wait for everything to fall in her lap. It doesn’t matter where she’s shooting, or who with (with Margaret out the back door of the show venue with every variety of model, volunteer and site worker looking on is not the most glamorous situation), Jess Gomes performs, and Jess Gomes conquers.

I can’t even tell you how long I spent flicking between equally strong photos of similar composition, trying to decide on final frames.

Who can really contest? I’m not even from Perth, and I’m going to say that you can never take the Perth out of a super chill, hard-working girl.

Beautiful photos margaret! What lens if your favourite too shoot with?

    • margaretzhang

Hey Aimee! Glad you’re liking the pics – I shot these on an 85mm, which is generally my go-to lens. Also a huge fan of the Sigma 150-500mm, but that’s literally a beast.

Girl you are INSANELY talented! These photos are ridiculously beautiful

  • Margaret – I’ve been a long time lurker but have decided to actually engage now. I love your style – fashion and writing – and always look forward to your posts for the wittiness as well as the aesthetics!

  • Anon

It’s one thing to reconstruct your own face – but no need to edit a supermodels face beyond recognition.

    • Maria Jean Lupfer

Are you serious? This is one of the more flattering representations of Jess Gomes. The retouching in Sports Illustrated is horrendous…

and way to be a coward and hide behind your screen.

      • Giulia R.

exactly – SI would be lucky to have margaret shoot jess like this!! think about that @Anon…

    • Chelsea Dunstan

AND the fact that Jessica Gomes Instagrammed every single one of these photos? CLEARLY they are beautiful photos and she loves them. Go reconstruct your attacks elsewhere, Anon.

  • I truly admire your work! You’re very multitalented.

  • Victoria

I am such a huge fan of her!! Amazing pictures!

  • Shannon

Love! Just quickly though, the shots stand alone enough without necessitating the slightly heavy handed use of dodge tool. For example, in the close up with the striped top the right side of her face (left from our perspective) has had a little too much of the shadow dodged out, as has the area on both side of her nose, down to her top lip. Let the shadows be shadows, mids be mids, and highlights be highlights. Or, if you’re going to mess around with them, at least do it consistently across the image – the values in the rest of the shadows on her face give it all away.

Beautiful shots, and I don’t mean to be unnecessarily critical – you just seem like the kind of girl who appreciates genuine feedback in a sea of (understandable) fangirling ;)
